Thieves in St. John's put a criminal spin on the Christmas spirit of sharing, leaving police to probe a series of robberies at cars parked outside church services.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was contacted after several people returned to their cars after Christmas Eve services to find they had been robbed.
At least seven cars were broken into during a midnight mass at the Roman Catholic Basilica, the RNC said.
As well, the owners of two cars were robbed during a service at St. Thomas Anglican Church, further east on Military Road.
Meanwhile, armed robberies in the St. John's area did not take a holiday on Christmas.
The RNC said a man wearing a mask and armed with a crowbar held up an Empire Avenue service station at about 9 p.m.
Police said the suspect stole a trayload of cash from the register.
The suspect is described as being about 30 and was wearing dark clothes. He may have used a vehicle to make his escape, the RNC said.
