Bills, Lions suffer key injuries

Last Updated: Monday, December 24, 2007 | 2:43 PM ET

Buffalo Bills left tackle Jason Peters and Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones will miss their regular-seaon finales this weekend, their teams announced Monday.

Peters will miss Buffalo's game at Philadelphia on Sunday because of a groin injury that could also keep him from playing in the Pro Bowl in February.

Coach Dick Jauron said that Peters will have tests this week to determine the severity of the injury suffered in the second quarter of a 38-21 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.

"Hopefully, it'll be OK in time and hopefully he'll be able to participate in the Pro Bowl as a healthy tackle," Jauron said. "I'm sure that Jason's excited about playing in the Pro Bowl and will want to play in it.

"But I'm sure also he'll do the right thing as we move along."

Jauron said Peters had been bothered by a sore groin for several weeks before aggravating it when his right leg slid out from under him while blocking Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. Peters lay on the field for several minutes before limping off on his own.

He watched from the sideline before being escorted to the Bills locker room with two minutes left in the second quarter. Without Peters, Buffalo allowed three sacks, ending a franchise record-tying string of three games without a sack.

A converted tight end, Peters has not missed a start in 40 games since taking over at right tackle midway through the 2005 season.

Jones may need surgery

A torn knee ligament will keep Jones, the Lions running back, out of his team's game Sunday at Green Bay, and could sideline him until the start of training camp next summer.

Tests revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Jones's right knee. He was injured late in the first half of Sunday's 25-20 victory over Kansas City after being tackled on a short reception.

Coach Rod Marinelli said Monday the team's medical staff will wait until swelling goes down in the knee to determine the best remedy. He wasn't sure of the extent of the tear or whether it will need surgery.

Jones, who leads the Lions with 581 yards and eight touchdowns on 153 carries, broke a bone in his right foot late last season and spent all of training camp on the physically unable to perform list after offseason surgery to repair the fracture. He was activated for Detroit's third regular-season game.

"It's been tough," Marinelli said. "He's been a warrior all year."

T.J. Duckett, who rushed for a season-best 102 yards against Kansas City, should get the bulk of the carries Sunday in Green Bay. Marinelli said the Lions also will use Aveion Cason and Tatum Bell.

Starting right tackle Damien Woody sprained his right shoulder against the Chiefs, but Marinelli said Woody could be ready to play the Packers if he develops enough strength to push off with the shoulder.
