The director of Nova Scotia's Alcohol and Gaming Division says he wants to see a plan for stronger security at a downtown Halifax nightclub after a drunken brawl that resulted in 38 police arrests on Christmas Eve.
The Dome has been closed under an unusual special order since the incident and a hearing is set for Friday at the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to see if the nightclub will be allowed to reopen for New Year's.
Dennis Kerr, director of the Alcohol and Gaming Division at the Labour Department, said his officials will attend the hearing because the incident was "disturbing and concerning."
He said the division's officials want to ensure the bar has met a regulatory requirement that it has enough security staff to haveĀ "care and control of the premises."
He said the province may also make recommendations to the review board on the sale of $1-per-shot liquor to patrons at The Dome.
Both the mayor and the chief of police in Halifax have cited low-priced drinks as a key cause of the late-night brawling at Halifax drinking establishments.
