For hundreds of years, opportunistic entrepreneurs have burrowed into the land, seeking gold, coal, lead, zinc - anything the marketplace would buy.
It is a story of violence, cruelty and bravery. But in the 1980's mining faded from the province's economy as many of the mines were shut down.
But now, with developing nations clamouring for all sorts of materials to fuel their booming economies, mining is once again on the rise.
Old mines are re-opening and new projects are being developed. And this generation of mine operators say the business can be done in a way that doesn't hurt the environment or exploit its workers.
