Art! Winter! Solstice! The Mittentime Revue (and mini art sale) On December 21st a well-respected group of Prince Edward Island artists will come together for a unique cabaret-style performance of music, poetry, and comedy. Tanya Davis, Catherine MacLellan, Jenn Grant, Patrick Ledwell, Daniel Ledwell,and The Count and the Cuban Cocktail will be performing at The Guild (115 Richmond Street) beginning at 8pm. Tickets are available in advance from the venue for $12 or at the door before the show for $15.00. The night will feature the music stylings of Catherine MacLellan (PEI sweetheart and Music Award Winner and multiple ECMA nominee), Jenn Grant (rising star musician of the East Coast) Daniel Ledwell (visual artist and multi-instrumentalist set to release his debut album) and Tanya Davis (celebrated poet and 2007 PEI Music Award Nominee). Patrick Ledwell (renowned stand-up comic and comedy writer) will be performing his infectious and roaring comedy, including some brand new holiday material and The Count and The Cuban Cocktail, a local quintet, will be performing a veritable cocktail of both Spanish and English sounds. The night will also feature poetry by Tanya as well as a group collaboration which may or may not include dance, theatrics, and original takes on Christmas carol standards...! Bring your family and come celebrate the season with sleigh rides, snacks and carol singing with the Cymbria Lions Club Choir. Hosted by Jean and Marguerite Doucet and sponsored and paid for by the Cymbria Lions Club. This event will take place on the Doucet House grounds in Rustico on Friday December 21st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Dress warmly.

The Spa’s annual Christmas breakfast is this Friday morning, December 21 between 6 and 9 am, at Cheers restaurant in the Charlottetown Mall. Proceeds from this year’s breakfast are going to the Heart and Stroke Foundation here on PEI. Everyone’s invited to come enjoy this full country breakfast this Friday morning. Tickets are $10 each, available at the restaurant.

 

December 22
Volunteers are and always will be an essential part of our community. Since 2001, the City of Summerside has recognized the Summerside Volunteer of the Year with an award presentation at the New Year’s Day Levee. Nominations for this year are presently being received for this prestigious award that acknowledges and awards a volunteer citizen who has made an outstanding contribution to the community. Nominations forms are available at the Summerside Wellness Centre Reception desk and completed nomination forms including the nominees volunteer activities and other relevant information can be forwarded to the City’s Community Services Department.Deadline for submissions is December 22 with the award being presented at the New Year’s Day Levee.

Travel back in time to the first Christmas in this live, indoor, interactive nativity tour to Bethlehem. Everyone is welcome to Community Baptist Church's 5th Annual Bethlehem's Treasure, taking place two evenings: December 22 and December 23 at 7:00 p.m. Tour guides and travel brochures provided to everyone! The Annual Holy Redeemer Candlelight Carol Service will be held on December 23rd at 7:30 PM in the church on Pond Street.

The Calvary Temple in Charlottetown presents "The Heart of christmas". This cantata looks into the real reason for the season! This event is filled with inspiring, uplifting music featuring a children's choir, solos and a quartet. Come and bring your family and friends for this great time of music and celebration of the Christmas season! The event takes place on December 23 at 10:30 a.m. and admission is free.

The Carols by Candlelight service by the Saint Andrews United Church senior choir will take place at the Sunday morning service. The service will be held at St.Andrews United Church, Vernon Bridge.

The St. John's United Church in Wallace, Nova Scotia invite one and all to a Christmas Eve Service starting at 7:00 pm.

 

December 27
Summerside Wellness Centre Ready for Grand Opening. Get ready for the biggest party of the year as the Grand Opening Celebrations at the Summerside Wellness Centre begin on Thursday, December 27th and continues right up until New Year’s Eve. The five day extravaganza will highlight everything the Wellness Centre has to offer. The public can enjoy a variety of displays, exhibits and events celebrating the opening of Eastern Canada’s sports, recreation, entertainment and meeting place including educational and interactive exhibits. Be sure not to miss the daily presentation on the construction of the Summerside Wellness Centre. To help burn those holiday calories, there will be daily toe tapping entertainment, guided tours, along with daily public events in the arenas, pool, bowling lanes, walking track and Iron Haven Gym. For the sports fan, watch Team Canada in pursuit of the gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship on the big screen in the Veterans Convention Centre.

For a second year, the Grandmothers to Grandmothers group will be presenting a film to promote awareness of AIDS. This years film is entitled "Women: the face of AIDS" and will be shown at Eptek Art & Culture Centre on December 27 at 1:30pm. All are welcome to attend. Eptek Centre is located at 130 Harbour Drive in Summerside. For more details, call 888-8373. Grandmothers to Grandmothers works internationally under the auspices of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

 

December 28
As part of the Grand Opening Celebrations at the Summerside Wellness Centre, a free Encore exercise class will be held for those that have experienced breast cancer. The exercises in the hydrotherapy class are designed to improve strength, mobility and flexibility while improving general fitness and well being. Each participant is able to work at their own pace and ability. Cancer survivor and certified instructor Marlene Cairns will lead the class which will take place on December 28th at 12 noon. Volunteer as a 'Holiday Host' With Newcomers to Canada. Welcome a new family to Canada by volunteering for project ‘Holiday Host’, through the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada. In this program you will experience a cultural exchange by inviting a family into your home for a meal over the holidays. We can connect you with a family spending their first Christmas in Canada. New Years Annual Country Levee at Handibear Hills Horse Sanctuary, Inc. January 1st is the traditional birth day for horses. Come and Join us at the barn for our annual Party. The Arthritis Society and the CARI Aquatics Centre invite you to attend their open house on Thursday, Jan. 3rd, at 5 pm, to learn about their basic Aqua Arthritis program. January 4, 2008-February 3, 2008 Door-to-Door Awareness and Fundraising Campaign. Volunteer canvassers will be visiting homes across PEI to deliver Alzheimer Disease information, as well as, provide an opportunity for people to donate to the Alzheimer Society of PEI.

 

January 5
Get fit and help a good cause. Fitness for Charity features a whole day of fitness classes to help you with your New Years Resolutions. Everything from cardio, strength training, Yoga, running and even a session called "Baby Dancing" where you work out with baby. All money raised will help Seniors and people with disabilities. January 6
Canadian Food Grains Bank Benefit Concert featuring, Dino and the Harmonies, One Accord with Ed Doiron and the Zion Presbyterian Praise Band Come out and help support many needy families by supplying grain for food. The concert will be held at the Zion Presbyterian Church, Prince St, Charlottetown on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 7:00pm Admission: $10.00 Adult, $5.00 children. This year, PEI's Ukrainian community along with friends will gather to celebrate Christmas Eve on January 6th at 4:00p.m. at the Belvedere Golf Course. Food is at the centre of Ukrainian culture and the Supper consists of 12 meatless (but hearty) courses, including such favourites as Borsch (beet soup), Pyrohy (perogies) and Holubtsi (cabbage rolls). Dinner will commence when we see the first star at 5 pm. Everyone is welcome! Other activities will include carols, a pageant, dancing, door prizes and a Trivia Contest! Come out to Bizarro night on January 7th at the Guild at 9:00 p.m. Come watch some of the strangest independent films ever made on PEI and from throughout Canada. Films, videos, food, an artist challenge and more! There will be an information session about the 2008 Screenwriter's Bootcamp.

 

January 7
The regular season of auction-45s begins in the Orwell Corner Community Hall on Monday January 7th at 8pm, and weekly thereafter. A small admission charge includes light refreshments and various prizes. The season is sponsored by the Orwell Corner Board, part of Museums & Heritage PEI. January 8
A new series of prenatal classes is being planned for expectant parents served by the Montague Public Health Nursing Office. These classes will be held in Montague on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.and will run for six weeks commencing January 8,2008. Expectant parents are urged to register early in the pregnancy to receive the most benefit from the classes. January 9
The National Farmers Union is sponsoring a Public Meeting on Wednesday, January 9th from 7:30 to 9:00p.m. at the Dutch Inn in North River. Guest speaker will be Susan MacDonald, a naturopathist who practices in Amherst, Nova Scotia. A cancer survivor herself, Ms. MacDonald will speak on how to change the balance of your body to prevent or reverse illness.

The University of Prince Edward Island will host the second annual Atlantic University Undergraduate History and Classics Conference from February 7th to the 10th. Members of the student organizing committee, business director Paige Matthie, executive director Lloyd MacKenzie and events coordinator Ian Lane, met recently with faculty advisor Dr. Richard Raiswell, of the UPEI Department of History, to discuss conference plans. The committee will accept abstracts for presentations until January 10th, from undergraduate students attending universities in Atlantic Canada. Presentations must have a historical theme. Charlottetown-Island writer Deirdre Kessler will give an illustrated talk called "Deirdre's Devilish Time in Tasmania" on Thursday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Prince Edward Island’s Main Building Faculty Lounge. The public is welcome to attend this free event, which is part of the UPEI English Department's Winter's Tales series, co-sponsored by the Prince Edward Island Writers' Guild. Refreshments will be served.

 

January 13
Legendary Hockey Heroes will be coming to Charlottetown for the Oldtimer's Hockey Challenge taking place On Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 4:00 pm at The Civic Centre. Hockey Hall of Famers Bryan Trottier and Billy Smith will join the hockey Heros to play the PEI Law Enforcement Hockey Team to reaise funds for the Special Olympics. Recently Betty MacLeod lost her husband, home and belongings in a fire. The community is organizing a few things to show Betty we care and to provide her with some support as she deals with this tragic loss. Donations to a Fire Fund for Betty MacLeod, Forest Hill are being accepted at any PEI Credit Union. A Benefit Concert is also being held Jan. 13, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Peters School. Storm date Jan 20. There will a Silent Auction and lots of great music. Proceeds are in aid of Betty MacLeod. The ECMA in association with Music PEI will sponsor an Export Readiness Training Workshop for Film and Television on January 18th in Charlottetown. The Confederation Centre Board Room will be the location for this full day Master Class facilitated by Jan Miller. By attending this workshop/seminar you will learn how to enhance your presentation and pitching techniques to music supervisors, film and television producers and key industry players in order to have your music placed in film and television.The workshop is designed for export ready artists, managers and companies who wish to perfect their presentation and pitching skill sets while developing relationships with key players from the film and television industries. You will learn the components required to strengthen personal communication styles and how to adapt pitches for conversational one-on-one meetings. Participants will take part in a three hour session focusing on the essential elements required to conduct an effective business meeting where they observe live one-on-one pitch conversations in action and listen in on the feedback from experienced industry folks such as a music supervisor and a producer.Pre-registration is required. The ECMA in association with Music PEI are pleased to announce they will present world class performance coach Tom Jackson in Charlottetown for two full days January 25th and 26th at the Guild. He is considered one of the foremost live performance/on stage consultants in the music industry. Tom will host a very interactive performance coaching session each day 10 am to 12:30 pm open to all Music PEI members, artists and groups. Music PEI’s First Ever Funding Deadline Is Next Month! If you are a PEI artist/group the deadline for submitting a funding proposal to Music PEI is fast approaching. The first ever deadline will be Monday, January 28th at 5:00 p.m. All applications and funding proposals must be received in the Music PEI office by that time or be postmarked no later than the 5:00 p.m. deadline. Program guidelines, application packages and assorted special forms are all available on line at the Music PEI web site for downloading. Go to www.musicpei.com. Let Eptek Centre brighten your winter days with our lighting exhibition. The exhibit curator, Boyde Beck, has brought together the personal collection of lamps of Summerside resident Trueman Pate and artefacts from the permanent collection of Museum and Heritage PEI. A wall of sparkling glass holds over 500 oil lamps. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm and on Sunday 12 pm to 4 pm. Please call 888-8373 for more details.

We are looking for students who are willing to share a bit about their hometown through pictures, objects, songs or anything. The regular monthly meeting of Lady Slippers Needle Arts Guild is held on the Fourth Tuesday of each month at Beach Grove Home in Charlottetown. A Stitching Night is also held on the second Tuesday of the same months. All visitors and new members are welcome.

There will be no Canadian Olde Tyme Square Dancing Lessons given by instructors Tom Connor and Velma Carmody at Murphy’s Community Centre on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:30pm during the month of December, but classes will resume again on January 10. You do not require a partner to join, and all classes are free of charge. Phone the Centre at 892-1719 to sign up.

The Knit-a-Mitt Program meets at Murphy’s Community Centre every Thursday afternoon from 1pm to 2:30pm and new members are always welcome. This group meets in an effort to provide handmade products wherever they are needed within the community.

Ying Yang Yoga Classes are being held at Murphy’s Community Centre on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm. The drop-in fee for each class is $6.00, and participants are requested to wear loose clothes, bring water to drink, and bring a mat to lie on during the session.
