"Cultural management is in a period of fundamental, pervasive and long term change; managers must deal with a host of dramatic, often contradictory, demands and challenges. The field facing a series of paradoxes that must be understood and managed rather than "resolved". On the one hand the field is expanding as a result of a broadened understanding of the nature and scope of cultural activity and a blurring of categories and boundaries with which we have defined the field; on the other hand are the countervailing contracting pressures of legitimization, professionalization, specialization (e.g. accreditation, career models, competency frameworks, etc.). On the one hand there is a growing need for specialized management skills and knowledge and on the other a simultaneous need for strong generalists - managers with more holistic and integrated perspectives regarding the management of cultural enterprises and the political, economic, social and other environmental conditions that influence and are influenced by these enterprises."
