"Located in the ancestral territory of the Vuntut Gwitch'in First Nation, the park provides important habitat for the Porcupine caribou and a wealth of other species, especially waterfowl. It has the highest ecological integrity rating of Canada's national parks. The idea for a national park arose during negotiation of the Vuntut Gwitch'in land claim: the park enabled Parks Canada to protect a significant example of the northern Yukon eco-region and provided a way for the Vuntut Gwitch'in to maintain their traditional cultural and spiritual connections to the land. Formally established in 1995, the park is one of the most successful examples of community engagement in and support for a major conservation initiative."
