"Aboriginal communities throughout Canada are looking towards the cultural and adventure tourism sector as a means of creating jobs, building local economies, and providing youth with a future. Whether a community is just starting to look at the opportunities in this sector, or if it has been operating a cultural centre, resort hotel or hosting an annual Pow Wow for many years, there is one fundamental requirement for success – visitors. If a community has made the decision to open its doors to the world, it needs to get the word out about what it has to offer.
Self promotion and community marketing are not something that comes easy for Aboriginal communities. Until recently, the thought of hordes of tourists arriving at the front gate of the Nation, eagerly looking for things to do, places to visit, rooms to stay in overnight, and meals to eat, seemed absurd. To actively promote our villages and regions as places that people would travel long distances to visit didn’t seem plausible."
