"Service description: A pilot version of Gabriel was launched in 1995, and as of 1 January 1997 Gabriel has become the official service of the CENL libraries. It is a shared networked information system, using standard networking technology. It is based on World Wide Web technology, and it incorporates links to other networked services (such as Telnet and Z39.50).
Through mirroring worldwide access to Gabriel is guaranteed. The Gabriel service is managed by a board, which comprises the directors of five National Libraries, and maintained by a service team of staff members from a few libraries involved. As Gabriel is a shared service, all CENL members are equally responsible for the quality of the service. This has proven to be a key factor to the success of the service."
