"The Museums Association was set up by a small group of museums in 1889 to look after the interests of museums and galleries, and raise standards in the profession. Today, it is still entirely independent of government and is funded by its membership, which is made of up individual museum professionals, institutions such as the British Museum, and corporate members.

The MA has an executive staff, but it is governed by its council, made up of leading people in museums and galleries, elected by the MA membership.

The MA provides information, lobbies government, advises museums and museum people, and provides programmes of events, training and professional development. It is also responsible for ethical standards in museums, including issues such as disposal of collections and trading and valuations of objects."
