Marilyn Smith

Member: Cities and Citizenship Workshop (Metropolis); Initiative to Study the Social Effects of Culture (ISSEC)

Marilyn Smith is one of the organizers and presenters for the Workshop entitled “Cities and Citizenship: Developing Indicators of Cultural Diversity” which will take place at the 10th International Metropolis Conference -- Our Diverse Cities: Migration, Diversity and Change to be held in Toronto, October 17 – 21, 2005. She is also the coordinator of the on-line forum at Culturescope.ca to facilitate discussion of the questions to be considered at the workshop for conference participants attending the workshop.

Marilyn is a Research Officer in the Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate (SRA) at the Department of Canadian Heritage. Some of the key roles of SRA include identifying key cross-sectoral issues and engaging stakeholder dialogue, strengthening policy research infrastructure within the Department and across government, promoting knowledge sharing and providing input on emerging horizontal issues across and between governments. Marilyn’s work at SRA has covered a broad range of policy research issues and projects that include social and cultural indicators, cultural policy on diversity and cultural rights, heritage and Aboriginal culture, anti-doping measures in sport, and non-recognition of foreign credentials. She has organized and presented at cultural policy workshops and conferences on behalf of the Department and is a member of the Academic Advisory Committee for the Initiative to Study the Social Effects of Culture (ISSEC), a group that is working to develop new ways to explore the impacts of culture and diversity on Canadian communities.

Her interests in the culture and heritage of Canada inspired Marilyn to pursue degrees in Canadian Studies. She holds a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Canadian Studies, (1994) from the University of Calgary, a Master of Arts, Canadian Studies, (1999) from Carleton University, and has completed partial requirements in the PhD program in Canadian Studies at Carleton.
