"In March 2006 an eclectic group of “future thinkers” in the digital culture world gathered for a roundtable meeting in Toronto (March 2006) hosted by the Culture and Technology Task Force and the Canadian Cultural Observatory of Canadian Heritage. The group set out to describe the “New Normal”- patterns and trends that reflect the impact of new technologies on Canadian society, particularly within the cycle of cultural creation, production, distribution and consumption.
A predominant theme that came out of the round table was that of the incredible speed of change and that “the norm is now transition” 1. Even in the space of the intervening year, change has been breath-taking with respect to technological developments, creative applications of digital tools and cultural consumption patterns.
As a mirroring exercise, the Department of Canadian Heritage convened a one day working group in March 2007 which was called New Normal Version 2:07 and brought together departmental staff and the original round table participants2 to discuss the activities of the past year and to reflect more deeply on the key questions that arose out of the roundtable discussion in 2006."
