Legislation & Regulations 32 of 75
"UNESCO is reinforcing its campaign to strengthen the ratification and implementation of conventions protecting cultural heritage, in particular the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property and the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects.
Looting, theft, illegal export and import, and illicit trafficking of cultural property are international problems affecting all States to various extents. Such an international problem is best fought against by an international response. From a legal standpoint this is the objective of this new UNESCO Database initiative : it will make easily available the relevant national legislation, in the country of origin as well as abroad, to organizations, institutions, private entities or individuals having a legal question concerning an object that may have been stolen or pillaged, and/or illegally exported, imported or acquired."
