On June 4 the Canadian Cultural Observatory hosted a keynote address (translated text to be posted on Culturescope.ca) by Dr. Caroline Andrew, Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa. The event, which took place at the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities in London, Ontario, was held in conjunction with the book launch of Accounting for Culture: Thinking Through Cultural Citizenship.

Accounting for Culture is a unique collection of essays that critically examines cultural citizenship, cultural indicators and governance. It is one of the outcomes of a policy research colloquium held in November 2003 that was co-sponsored by the Canadian Cultural Research Network, the University of Ottawa and the Department of Canadian Heritage. It was at this colloquium that the Canadian Cultural Observatory was launched.Dr. Andrew is an editor of Accounting for Culture; the other three co-editors of the book also participated in the launch, which was supported by the Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the University of Ottawa Press. Professor Monica Gattinger of the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa made the opening remarks. Ms. M. Sharon Jeannotte, Senior Advisor in the Canadian Cultural Observatory, introduced Dr. Andrew. Dr. Will Straw of the Department of Art History and Communications Studies at McGill University thanked all those who had contributed to the successful publication of Accounting for Culture.
