Cultural tourism is one of the leading global industries, is fast expanding, and requires sustainable development. These were among the messages presented by two tourism experts who spoke at the latest event in the Observatory In Focus Speakers' Series.
Co-hosted by the Tourism Policy Directorate of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the event featured Marie-Andrée Delisle, a tourism development consultant, and Julianna Priskin, Ph.D., associate professor at UQAM and a consultant in eco-tourism and sustainable tourism development.
The two dynamic speakers explored tourism that integrates social, cultural, environmental, and economic sustainability. Ms. Priskin outlined the challenges faced by cultural tourism, such as the need to preserve the physical landscape. Ms. Delisle emphasized the need for community involvement. She used several cultural tourism examples in North America, including Kimmirut, an Inuit village, which wants to attract tourists.
The event, which attracted a capacity audience of about 40, generated so much interest that a follow-up discussion is planned for June. Watch for details!
