Cultural Indicators Workshop

With both policy makers and the media showing increasing interest in local-level cultural indicators, Creative City Network of Canada's Centre of Expertise on Culture and Communities, and supported by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Infrastructure Canada, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the City of Ottawa, held a very successful workshop on cultural indicators in Ottawa on November 27. Co-chaired by Nancy Duxbury, the Director of the Centre, and M. Sharon Jeannotte, Senior Advisor to the Canadian Cultural Observatory, the workshop brought together about 40 people from all three levels of government, as well as independent researchers and organizations engaged in indicators development. The participants spent the day sharing information about current initiatives and comparing approaches and issues, including how and by whom cultural indicators should be used.

Presentations were made by Carissa Wieler (Canadian Sustainability Indicators Network), Benoit Allaire (Quebec Observatory on Culture and Communications) and Barbary Nehiley (Halifax Regional Municipality and Chair of the FCM's Quality of Life Reporting System). This was followed by a lively "open mike" session and breakout groups, during which participants shared knowledge, discussed methodologies and engaged in a sometimes intense discussion of how to choose the best cultural indicators. The CECC will prepare a post-workshop report on the major points, conclusions and recommendations raised by the group, and this will be posted on Culturescope.ca as soon as it is ready.
