Fall 2007: A Harvest of Conferences and Workshops for Cultural Research and Development Professionals

The Canadian Cultural Observatory anticipates a stimulating 2007-2008 season for the In Focus Speakers’ Series. These workshops are co-hosted by the Observatory and the Knowledge Centre at the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Canadian Cultural Observatory anticipates a stimulating 2007-2008 season for the In Focus Speakers’ Series. These workshops are co-hosted by the Observatory and the Knowledge Centre at the Department of Canadian Heritage and developed with a range of partners both outside and within the Department. Confirmed topics include “Focus on Youth: Canadian Youth Arts Programming and Policy”, “Socio-economic conditions of visible minorities in Canada, 1967 to 2017” and “The Creative Economy”. Other key cultural research and development events across Canada include the OECD-Canada Technology Foresight Forum on the Participative Web: Strategies and Policies for the Future (October 3) in Ottawa, the Creative City Network of Canada’s 6th Annual Conference “The Ecology of a Creative Community” (October 10-13) in Edmonton, the Insight Information’s “Entertainment Industries Summit” (October 22-23) in Toronto, the Archives and Museum Informatics’ 2007 ICHIM conference “Digital Culture and Heritage” (October 24-26) in Toronto, the Association of Canadian Studies’ conference Is Canadian Culture “Popular”? Examining the Paradoxes of Canadian Popular Culture which includes a one-day “Culture and Technology Forum” (October 26) in Gatineau, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters 2007 Convention (November 4-6) in Ottawa, Visual Arts Summit (November 25-27) in Ottawa and the International Institute of Communications (IIC), Canadian Chapter's Conference (December 3-4) in Ottawa.

On the international scene, the 12th International Metropolis Conference “Migration, Economic Growth and Social Cohesion” (October 8-12) will take place in Melbourne Australia, the 33rd Annual Social, Theory, Politics and the Arts Conference (October 10-13) will take place in New York and the Roundtable on Festival Policies of Public Authorities in Europe and CIRCLE Research Network Annual General Meeting (October 19-20) in Barcelona Spain.

Finally, the Department of Canadian Heritage has a full slate of meetings this fall, including the federal, provincial, territorial meeting of Ministers responsible for culture and heritage (which was held on September 7th in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan), the 10th Annual Ministerial Meeting of the International Network on Cultural Policy, hosted by the Minister of Culture for Spain in Seville from September 20 to 22. Ministers of Culture and High Officials of more than 40 countries will discuss the issue of intercultural dialogue and the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, to be held in Ottawa from December 10 to 13, will launch the discussions on how this key UNESCO Convention will be concretely implemented.
