"In an attempted solution, portions of Clayoquot Sound were designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a conservation model that connects the protection of biodiversity with the livelihood of local people. While results to date have been mixed, the establishment of a biosphere reserve in this highly polarized community has provided useful lessons for other conservation efforts: new institutions are not a solution to old problems, the objectives of land designation must be clearly articulated, community rifts take a long time to heal, and sustainable land use requires realistic economic alternatives."
