A recent presenter at the Observatory’s latest In Focus Speakers Series, Rowland Lorimer is Director of the Master of Publishing program and the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. He is Professor of Communication and past editor and publisher of the Canadian Journal of Communication. He is an honorary President of the Association for Canadian Studies and is serving a second time as President of the Canadian Association of Learned Journals.

For the last ten years his research has had a dual focus. The first is on the Canadian publishing industry. The second is on the mass media. He has carried out over 15 commissioned studies on book, magazine and scholarly journal publishing in Canada. His current work is oriented to finding means to allow small book and periodical publishers to capitalize on online technology. He oversaw the development of some bibliographic database software PExOD, now used by several firms and is involved in Synergies, a national $11 million project to assist in the online publishing and dissemination of scholarly journals and research.
