Sebastian Chan is the Manager of the Web Services Unit at the Powerhouse Museum. Coming from a background in social policy, journalism and media criticism as well as information technology, he has been building and producing websites and interactive media since the mid 1990s. At the Powerhouse he has been responsible for driving a strong user focus in design, usability and content, as well as expanding the scope and reach of the museum's suite of online projects beyond traditional brochureware and closed-environment interactive games. In recent years he has also been pivotal in leading the Powerhouse Museum's innovations in folksonomies,SEO, user generated content, as well as corporate blogging. He is involved in several current Australian Research Council grants with various Australian universities examining social media and its impact in the cultural sector, and has spoken internationally on the application and development of social media and web technologies.
His other interests include electronic music and digital art, and he has directed and curated large scale national and international events and festivals, as well as producing related media from radio to print. He runs the Fresh + New blog covering issues and new ideas around digital media and museums at: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/dmsblog/, and is also the creative director of the Museum's Design Hub portal - Design Hub Portal.
