Pamela Brett–MacLean, PhD (C), is the co-director of the Arts and Humanities in Health and Medicine program at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. She co-founded the program with Dr. Verna Yiu, in 2006.
Ms. Brett–MacLean’s doctoral studies on the arts and aging considered the involvement of the arts in retirement homes and continuing-care settings. Her dissertation focused on the influence of amateur arts experience on the health and wellness of older adults who become involved in art after retirement.
In 2005, Pamela was an invited participant at the First Canadian Forum on Arts and Health. She also served on the conference planning committee for the Society for the Arts in Healthcare and the First Canadian International Conference on the Arts and Healthcare held in Edmonton, Alberta.
In 2001, Pamela chaired a five-day conference track on Creative Aging Through the Arts that was part of the 17th World Congress of the International Association on Gerontology (Vancouver, British Columbia).
Dr. Brett–MacLean is currently a member of the committee planning a networking event around the subject of the arts and health that will be held in Alberta. The project was initiated by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
A longtime advocate for the development of structures to support the awareness and use of the arts in health care, health-care education, and community life, Pamela Brett–MacLean is also an active member of a research team exploring telehealth as a way of extending the benefits of an arts-in-medicine program to cancer patients in rural areas.
