Pablo Sobrino began his federal public service career in 1977 as an officer cadet in the Canadian Coast Guard in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He served on a number of ships as a navigation officer including the Vancouver, a meteorological vessel stationed in the Pacific, as well as a trained hovercraft pilot for Search and Rescue operations protecting the waters off the Lower Mainland. During this period, he completed his B. Sc. in Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. He then relocated to Ottawa for ten years where he worked in a variety of training and policy positions until he was asked to serve as the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner of the Coast Guard. In 1997, he returned to Vancouver as Director of Marine Programs for the Coast Guard. In 2000, Pablo changed career paths and took on a challenging assignment as Area Director for the Lower Fraser at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. In 2002, he assumed the position of Regional Executive Director for Canadian Heritage Western Region where he was responsible for programs in areas of arts and culture, official languages, multiculturalism, aboriginal affairs, celebrating Canada, and the 2005 Alberta Centennial. During his tenure he was actively involved in horizontal federal files including policy development, Urban Aboriginal Strategy, and Vancouver 2010. Pablo began his current assignment as the DG of Strategic Policy, Planning and Research for Canadian Heritage in April 2006.
