Joelle Mader, Chair
Joelle has been with the Observatory since January 2005. She came from the Policy Research Group (formerly Strategic Research and Analysis) Directorate of Canadian Heritage, where she tackled research subjects ranging from diversity in broadcasting to Aboriginal heritage policy, as well as assisting in the organization of research workshops and conferences. Joelle holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Religious Studies from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master's in Public Policy and Administration from Carleton University. In 2003 she was very pleased to be chosen as the Canadian Heritage participant in the Jeanne Sauvé Convergence Program, a six-week professional development program awarded by Canadian Women in Communications to one woman each from Canadian Heritage, Industry Canada and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, plus two women from private industries.
Claire McCaughey
Claire McCaughey is currently the Research Manager at the Canada Council for the Arts. She has been engaged in arts and culture research since the mid-1980s, including serving as Senior Analyst and Editor of Focus on Culture (a quarterly analytical publication) at Statistics Canada in the early 1990s. In 2002, she was appointed Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Culture Statistics at Statistics Canada. In the early 1980s she was an economist with the Economic Council of Canada. She has a B.Soc.Sc. (Hon.) in Economics from the University of Ottawa and an M.A. in Economics from Queen’s University.
Michelle Ryan
Michelle joined the Research Services team at the Knowledge Centre on March 31, 2003.
She obtained her Masters in Library and Information Studies in 1992 and has worked in several federal agencies and private sector libraries.
She also has a Masters of Arts in German, and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages (French, German and Spanish).
She provides reference and research services.
Marla Waltman Daschko
Marla’s positions in the public service have included: Archivist and Editor for the Library and Archives of Canada; Chief of Sound Recording Policy and Programs and Heritage Policy Officer for the Department of Communications (now the Department of Canadian Heritage); Chief of the National Literacy Secretariat Research and Policy Development Section; and currently, Chief of the Analysis and Integration Section of Statistics Canada’s Culture Statistics Program. Ms. Waltman Daschko is a member of the Canadian Cultural Research Network (CCRN) and the Initiative to Study the Social Effects of Culture (ISSEC). In addition to her broad experience with culture data, she has also edited a series of analytical publications based on literacy data. Ms. Waltman Daschko holds a B.A. (Hon.) in History and Anthropology from York University and an M.A. in History from Queen’s University.
