John Brotman was appointed executive director of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) in April 2001. The years since his appointment have seen the launch of the Council’s strategic plan and announcements of increased funding for the OAC. This has allowed the Council to begin stabilizing funding for arts organizations and to increase its commitment to arts education, touring, and grants to individual artists. The OAC has also been able to begin to address issues of cultural diversity and regional access, as well as Aboriginal and Francophone arts activity, through new programs and new positions at the Council.
John grew up in South Africa, where he attended the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He later trained as a musician in England, Belgium, and Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1977 and became the musician-in-residence at Keyano College, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where he organized many arts-in-the-community activities, establishing orchestras and choirs, directing and touring musical theatre productions, and presenting dance, theatre, and music events. After working for Alberta Culture in Edmonton, Mr. Brotman joined the Canada Council, where he helped establish touring networks in Atlantic and Western Canada. He then worked for Jeunesses Musicales du Canada as its Ontario executive director, before joining the Ontario Arts Council in 1989 as music officer. In this role, he introduced the innovative Popular Music program and the Changing Arts Practice workshops for orchestras in Ontario with the Guildhall School of England. In 1999, he was appointed OAC’s director of arts programs.
