Francesco brings to the Observatory over seven years of policy related work. In the summer of 2005, Francesco conducted an independent research project for La Société de développement de Montréal (SDM) to investigate Montréal’s “new” downtown core in the pursuit of city’s nomination process for UNESCO’s World Heritage list. He returned to the field in the summer of 2006, acting as the project coordinator for the Rideau Heritage Initiative’s rural pilot project. His additional previous experience includes four years as a Special Assistant to a Canadian Member of Parliament on Parliament Hill.
Mr. Manganiello has written and lectured on the subjects of cultural landscapes and cities, integrated approaches to community planning and development, and identity and heritage. In May 2007, he presented at the Observatory’s In Focus Speaker Series, on the topic of Arts and Heritage in Rural Communities, and he recently collaborated on the Observatory’s latest In Focus Publication, “To Save a Butterfly, Must One Kill It? the Historic Places Initiative in a Rural Context”.
In 2006, Francesco completed a M.A. in Heritage Conservation at the School of Canadian Studies, Carleton University. His research focused on cultural landscape as a heritage tool and how it can accentuate multiple understandings of a city's heritage to further benefit both heritage interpretation and management for the city of Montreal. He also earned an Honours B.A. in Communications and English Literature from the University of Ottawa.
