Projects & Programs 4 of 6
Led by Professors Robert LaLonde and Colm O’Muircheartaigh of the Harris School, the team will construct a detailed picture of cultural participation analyzed by socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, location, distance from institutions, age distribution and household composition.
Julia Perkins, a consultant who will help coordinate this project, helps put this project in context. “Generally speaking, other research that has been conducted in Chicago has either focused on particular institutions, types of institutions, or size of institutions, rather than attempting a collective examination,” she said. “Second, the methodology can be replicated 5, 10 or 20 years from now to measure any variations in arts participation within these communities. Finally, the study is Chicago specific and will provide us with a broader and deeper picture of the arts participation by people of color within our city.” This research, when completed, can be used as a benchmark or baseline to measure the effectiveness of future efforts to build diverse audiences by Joyce, as well as other foundations and cultural institutions. Additionally, it will form the basis for studies that explore the barriers that appear to restrict participation in these institutions.
The project team will also include Carroll Joynes, Executive Director of the Center, and Diane Grams, Associate Director.
