"Steroypes of ethnic, racial, religious and language groups are considered an important barometer of societal prejudices. In an era where prejudice and stereotypes are widely deemed unacceptable only a minority are willing to acknowledge holding unfavorable generalizations about various communities. The Association for Canadian Studies commissioned the firm Environics to ask Canadians whether they could think of negative stereotypes they held towards certain groups when they younger. Some seven out ten Canadians denied holding any such negative stereotypes, a figure that reveals much about the extent to which stereotyping is rejected by much of the population. On the basis of those who did admit to holding negative stereotypes the table below provides a breakdown on the basis of the specific groups towards which they once acknowledged holding negative views. Important insights as those groups that are most frequently the object of such stereotypes across the generation, by language and by region."
