International Comparative Studies of Ethnocultural Youth (ICSEY)

"In recent years immigrant children have come to constitute a significant and a growing proportion of the total school enrolment in countries of immigration. The proportion is particularly large in some cities. Immigrant children seem to be vulnerable to marginalisation and ethnic tension as they are overrepresented among the clients of health workers in many schools."

"The research programme includes the following countries: Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the U.S.A.

This research project will integrate a social psychological approach to ethnic identity, Berry's (1992) acculturation strategy and stress models, and Phinney's (1989) model of ethnic identification.

In this project we conceptualise and assess independently the general situation of the immigrant/minority group on the one hand and the situation of the individual respondent on the other. At the group level, the societies of origin and settlement are proposed to have direct influence on acculturation experiences. The group situation in the society of settlement includes the history of immigration and settlement, the resulting cultural diversity as a whole and attitudes towards immigration and diversity. For each immigrant group, there needs to be an understanding of cultural distance to the host culture, demography and community life."
