The Role of Linguistics Within a Multidisciplinary Framework For Studying the Initial Peopling of the Americas

"This paper will focus on the role that linguistics plays within the multi-disciplinary approach to studying American aboriginal origins. From a purely linguistic view point, the antiquity of American aboriginal linguistic units is largely unknown."

"The lack of tangible remains of language, such as written documents, in the pre-Columbian New World keeps linguistic traditions from being dated archaeologically in this area (Rogers 1985). The evidence presented by linguistics will be compared with the various other disciplines in order to obtain a better understanding of aboriginal origins. The use of linguistics is a great example displaying the necessity of analyzing contemporary aboriginal culture in the study of their people's ancestral past. Linguistics provides an essential methodology to better answer the questions of who?, what?, where?, when?, why?, and how? the first people stepped foot in the New World."
