"The CCA initiated the Chalmers Conferences in 2000 as an annual forum for national arts service organizations (NASOs) to discuss and collaborate on issues of common interest. Primarily supported from the proceeds of a small endowment fund, they form part of the CCA’s commitment to maintaining a direct link between members’ priorities and CCA activities. NASOs are a potent advocacy force which, individually and collectively, provide a voice that can effectively advise the federal government on policy issues. Developing the collective voice and a consensus on policy advice is an activity that the Chalmers Conferences are intended to further. The first Chalmers Conference, held at the National Gallery in Ottawa in November 2001, dealt with the topic of Taxation and the Artist. Approximately 55 people attended, representing 34 arts service organizations. At the end of the day long session, NASOs joined the CCA in signing an open letter to the Minister of Finance highlighting their interest in revisions to the Income Tax Act. The Chalmers Conference 2002, held in Toronto, dealt with two issues: Culture and Tourism: How to benefit without selling your soul; and Charitable Status: How to get it; How to keep it."
