Curriculum Methodology Relevant to Cultural Management Education

"This is a scan of key ideas, concepts, principles and related methodologies, drawn from the field of curriculum inquiry, of potential use in curriculum development for cultural management education in Canada. They are the methodological considerations within which the substantive issues identified in the other Background Papers study may best be considered in looking forward to Phase II of the work and beyond."

"Considerable strides have now been made working towards the development of curriculum for the field of Cultural management in Canada. The many individual courses and programs provide a rich source of valuable curriculum insights. In addition, a study was undertaken by the Canadian Association of Arts Administration Education (CAAAE) and a final report produced in 1987 on Management Development Needs of Publicly-Funded, Not-for-Profit Arts and Heritage Organisations in Canada. Within an occupational framework the report identified four broad areas of learning needs, within which learning objectives, learning outcomes and competencies need to be established: 1) general management skills, 2) specific management skills related to cultural management in publicly-funded, not-for-profit organizations, 3) knowledge of particular arts and heritage fields or disciplines, and 4) values and attitudes towards the arts and heritage.

It also identified six areas of skill and knowledge where priority must be placed in the development of courses of study (marketing, financial management, computer skills, fund raising, personnel management and tour management). In addition three education market segments (learner groups) were identified for attention in curriculum development: job entry level, job retraining or occupational shift, and skills upgrading or professional development for existing cultural managers. Training needs were identified on three program levels (community college, graduate and under-graduate) with special programs for distance education, focussing on career development and continuing education and other forms of professional development (colloquia)."
