"The aim of this discussion paper is to highlight the linkages between the field of arts and development and the importance of recognizing the arts as an integral component towards the formulation of sustainable development policies. In order to formulate and justify such an argument it is important to firstly highlight the division between culture and development, how such a division came about, what were its purposes and resulting consequences. Secondly and more crucially, I shall bring to the forefront the place of the arts, not just as a subcategory of culture, but art as a dynamic and independent discipline that can act as a driving force in drawing a concrete relationship between culture and development, thus occupying an important role in shaping development policies. In espousing the arguments of the text, I shall present the Arab perspective on the reshaping of artistic and cultural policies in the Arab world providing specific examples on how Jordan’s artistic and cultural policies have been influenced and ways in which they are moving forward."
