"In a European context the regions have been seen to have mounting importance since the 1980s, this having also been reflected at the political-institutional level with, for example, the founding of the (Europe-wide) "Assembly of European Regions" in the mid-eighties and the intensification of EU/EC regional policy, and finally the resolution contained in the Maastricht Treaty (1991) to set up official representation at EU level with the "Committee of the Regions". By the mid-nineties discussions about the regions had reached a high point, and they have subsequently remained present on the daily agenda."
