Privacy Statement

Collection, use and disclosure of personal information

AADAC does not automatically gather any personal information from you, such as your name, phone number, e-mail or address. We only have this information if you supply it voluntarily, usually through contacting us via e-mail. You should be aware, however, that when you send sensitive personal information via e-mail, you do so at your own risk.Electronic transmission is not a secure way to send personal information. As an alternative, phone numbers and addresses of our area offices are available at AADAC Services. Information about our non-crisis Help Line is available.

Any personal information you do provide is managed according to the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This means that, at the point of collection, you will be informed that your personal information is being collected, the purpose for which it is being collected and that you have a right to access the information.

Information collected via the Internet

If you browse through the Web site, read pages or download information, we will gather and store certain information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally. We automatically collect and store only the following information about your visit:

  • the internet domain (for example, "xcompany.com") that tells us the region or country you are visiting from
  • the search engine used to access our site
  • the address of any referring Web site (if you came to the AADAC Web site by a link)
  • the type of browser and operating system used to access our site
  • the date and time our site was accessed
  • the pages that were visited

We use this information to help us make our site more useful to visitors. We do not track or record information about individuals and their visits.

Cookies

AADAC does not use persistent cookies (cookies that pass information back and forth from the client machine to the server). We do use session cookies (tokens that remain active only until you close your browser). We use session cookies in managing our surveys, to prevent participants from voting twice in one session. We do not keep a database of the information obtained from these cookies.

Information collected in web forums and e-mails

If you join an AADAC online forum, we may ask you for your name and e-mail address. We do this so we can effectively manage the forum. But the only information we require is an e-mail address. Many forum participants use pseudonyms instead of their real names.

We treat e-mails the same way we treat letters sent to Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission. Any personal information you supply will not be disclosed to anyone except AADAC personnel who need the information to respond to your request.

Some personal information is collected to process Resource Catalogue orders, including name and address, but your information is used only for that purpose.

Security

For site security purposes and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, this government computer system employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage.

Except for authorized law enforcement investigations, no other attempts are made to identify individual users or their usage habits.
