New Touring Fund Will Open Up Opportunities for Yukon Artists

WHITEHORSE – A newly created Touring Artist Fund (TAF) will provide assistance to visual, performing and literary artists to tour their work outside of Yukon, Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor announced.

“The Yukon government recognizes the importance of Yukon artists to the social and economic well being of Yukon,” Taylor said. “This initiative gives artists the opportunity to present their work to other Canadians and overseas audiences. At the same time, they receive national and international exposure which benefits their professional development.”

Yukon artists, ensembles and companies who create and produce work in theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film, storytelling, literature or a combination of art forms are eligible to apply for assistance to present their work to the public at national or international exhibitions, concerts, festivals, or showcases.

“Many Yukon artists are ambassadors for Yukon,” Taylor added. “They share not only their talents and wealth of artistic expression with Yukoners, but they travel outside and share their love of this territory and pride of place beyond these borders to promote Yukon as a tourism destination to a wider audience.”

The $100,000 fund will be targeted to artists and ensembles who create and produce original work with the intention of expanding their reach to new audiences. TAF applications will be adjudicated by the Yukon Arts Advisory Council, which will make recommendations to the minister.

The first deadline for TAF applications is March 15. Applicants are encouraged to consult with the program officer before applying. Telephone 667-3535 or within Yukon 1-800-661-0408, extension 3535 or email artsfund@gov.yk.ca.

Application forms and guidelines are available through the Department of Tourism and Culture, Arts Section, 100 Hanson Street, Whitehorse, Yukon.
