Publication Ban Notification Pilot Project help

Introduction

"The Publication Ban Notification Pilot Project" provides timely information on publication bans to the public. On this page you can:

  1. search for information about publication bans;
  2. subscribe to receive notification of applications to be made for discretionary publication bans; and
  3. notify subscribers of applications for discretionary publication bans.

This pilot applies only to criminal proceedings in the Vancouver registry. Chief Justice Brenner has issued a practice direction which sets out the applications which trigger the requirement to notify the media outlets and other interested parties using this website.

The details of all bans that result from an application in court are listed on this website. As part of the pilot project, there will also be signs in the courtrooms in Vancouver when such a ban is in effect.

The ban details entered on this website are only a general description of the type of ban ordered in court and the exact terms of the ban may not always be entered. If you need the exact terms of the ban or order, please call the registry.

The details of automatic bans which are in effect by operation of statute are not included on this website. Nor will notification of these bans be posted in courtrooms. Members of the media are expected to be aware of the circumstances under which automatic bans are in effect.

Bans ordered in Provincial Court which apply to evidence presented in Supreme Court proceedings are also included on this website.

The details of bans ordered will be posted to this site as soon as possible upon receipt from registry staff. Depending on when an order is made, details of the ban ordered in court may not be posted until the next business day.

Information on publication bans ordered in the Robert Pickton trial are available on the Court Services website.
