COMMUNITY PLANNING ASSISTANT - COMMUNITY SERVICES - LAND PLANNING

The incumbent will work as a member of the Community Services Branch assisting in determining community needs, land planning issues and historical data. Will provide technical support regarding community development, land planning, zoning, and subdivision applications through research of maps, survey plans, historical data, as well as, attending community meetings and providing up to date information for local area planning.

Field of Study: Geography, Political Science, Community Planning, Regional Planning, Public or Municipal Administration, Natural Resource Management, or related field.

Qualifications: Knowledge of community development and land use planning and related legislation. An interest in public client based services. A basic understanding of computer operating systems and application software. Should be client orientated with good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills with the ability to work as a team member or independently on assigned projects. CARTOGRAPHER & LAND PLANNER - COMMUNITY SERVICES - COMMUNITY LAND PLANNING

The student will work as a member of the Community Development Program, Community Land Planning Branch. As such, he/she will use AutoCAD and GIS software to prepare thematic maps such as large scale cadastral maps of Yukon communities, zoning maps, Community site plans, subdivision sketches etc. The student will support the Community Land Planning Branch in the preparation documents, and digital or hard copy maps, provide technical research and support in GIS Technologies and Spatial Databases, perform Digital mapping, assist in compiling a central repository of meta data.

Field of Study: Geography, Community and Regional Planning, Natural Resource Management, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, or other related field.

Qualifications: Coursework in geography, regional planning, natural resource management, database management and/ or digital map production. Some knowledge of cartography fundamentals and theory, some theoretical knowledge or hands on experience with AutoCAD software. A basic understanding of computer operating systems, application software and hardware. The student should be client oriented with good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and has ability to work as a team member, or independently on assigned projects. FIRESMART OFFICER - COMMUNITY SERVICES - PROTECTIVE SERVICES

The incumbent will work with the FireSmart Manager and will coordinate and complete the development of a FireSmart lesson plans for delivery in schools, work with non-profit societies, First Nations, school councils and municipalities to assist in the application process for FireSmart funding. Following existing criteria, the student will then complete a project analysis for each group to include in an application package for presentation to a Technical Review Committee, a Senior Advisory Committee and then to the minister's committee for approval and funding. The incumbent may also be involved in some analysis for Yukon projects that require Environmental and Socio-economic assessment. Some field duties may include learning the Global Positioning System, and reporting on previous FireSmart projects to see if they have met the standards of work.

Field of Study: Environmental Studies, Renewable Resources, Forestry Management or related field

Qualifications: Knowledge and course work in environment and natural resources management. Proven organizations skills; good oral and written communication skills. This position is responsible for providing a variety of intermediate level financial and information systems management services. The position will be responsible for assisting with communication services, activities, products, and advice to support departmental and external clients, to ensure continuing public awareness of issues pertaining to Fire Management. The incumbent assists in presenting library programs for young people at Whitehorse Public Library during the summer. He/she will be responsible for supervising children participating in programs, advertising, organizing resources, planning and presenting programs. Duties will also include assisting in organizing adult programs (film shows, slide shows, reading), providing reference material and research for the completion of one or more library related projects. AIR OPERATIONS ADMIN ASSISTANT – COMMUNITY SERVICES – PROTECTIVE SERVICES

This position requires a thorough understanding of administrative and financial procedures preferably in a government setting. Responsibilities will include recording, tracking, verifying and preparing reports for all aircraft activity. This will include maintaining the Air Operations system data base and daily situation reports, preparing daily cost and flight time analysis on aircraft usage, entering and sorting data from daily flight reports, while creating and maintaining files for hard copies of flight reports, administrative and financial documentation and correspondence. Performs accounts payable duties by updating digital and hard copy data files on all Hire Agreements ensuring that contracts are completed and payments are processed in a timely fashion. Tracks fuel inventory, verifies fuel tickets and invoices for payment. Helps create and maintain up to date files and data sheets on air carriers, aircrafts and Pilot flight hours and usage.

Field of Study: Business, Accounting or related field.

Qualifications: Hands on experience with administrative, financial and organizational procedures in an operational environment. Participates as a member of a highly trained wildland firefighting crew that is responsible for rapid Initial Attack operations on wildfires and sustained action on campaign fires in the zone and throughout the Yukon. This is accomplished by maintaining fire equipment and themselves in a state of readiness during the fire season. During low fire hazard crewmembers perform grounds maintenance, repair of building and equipment, FireSmart projects, assisting the Zone Stores person by helping organize and maintain inventory. Lookout duties consist of detecting and early accurate reporting of wildfires by maintaining a thorough surveillance of a specific geographic area; recording, compiling and reporting meteorological observations and communicating with the Duty Officer through two-way radio. Assisting the Zone Storesperson in maintaining zone inventory, tracking of equipment, shipping receiving and transporting equipment in and out of fire zone. Act as an Aerial Observer during fixed-wing aircraft patrols. Data collection.

Field of Study: Forestry, Renewable Resource Management, Environmental Studies or other related field.

The incumbent will be responsible for the review, collection, integration and implementation of information for the digital image library of the Yukon Film Commission. Duties will consist of the incumbent using VisionNet software to develop a digital library specifically designed for film library location file management and by obtaining and entering image data for the program to automatically search and select images appropriate for client requests. Duties will also include conducting research, answering inter-departmental and client inquiries, and data input.

The incumbent will be required to schedule and make on-site visits to ensure the YTG programs, STEP and Summer Career Placement, are progressing in accordance with the program guidelines and requirements, and that sponsors and clients are conforming to contractual agreements. Will develop and administer evaluative instruments to gather and compile information on the effectiveness of the summer programs. Provide written reports to summarize evaluative information and to maintain written reports of all on-site visits.

The incumbent will be involved in assessment, diagnosis and solving computer hardware and software problems experience in Yukon school computer laboratories, classrooms, school offices and other Department of Education offices. Duties will include providing support of Macintosh and Windows computers and peripheral equipment in a networked environment, and the installing and configuring of computer hardware, software and peripherals. He/she will perform maintenance on workstations with Yukon schools through redistributing computers, networking classroom computers, imaging computers with new curriculum software and setting up printers and peripherals.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing a range of human resource support functions, which include leave management, pay and benefit administration, staffing services and advice and assistance to managers and employees on human resource issues and general support as needed to other unit staff. Primary focus is on client service. This position will also assist with collective agreement administration, assisting with staffing competitions, and participate in job evaluations, and carry out staff relations-related research as required.

AGRICULTURE RESEARCH ASSISTANT- ENERGY MINES & RESOURCES - AGRICULTURE

Under the supervision of the Agrologist the incumbent will be responsible for the data collection and maintenance of the field trials. Data collection includes harvesting and weighing of crops and recording results. Maintenance of the field trials involves mechanical and manual weeding, irrigating, and mowing using various farm implements. Physical endurance is important because the student will carry 50 lb bags of fertilizer and move awkward irrigation lines. Other day to day activities may include helping the Development Officer and Soils Technician with GPS mapping and assisting the Grazing Coordinator with vegetation assessments.

Field of Study: Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences or other related field.

Qualifications: Basic knowledge of field research techniques and must be able to collect data from scientific instruments and enter that data into spreadsheets. Work independently in remote locations with farm equipment. Some working knowledge of horticultural operations is an asset. Ability to use GPS equipment and an understanding of mapping would be valuable. Knowledge of standard computer programs is essential. Willingness to travel to remote field locations. Valid Class 5 driver's license.

LAY STREAM & ENVIRON. MONITOR - ENERGY MINES & RESOURCES - CLIENT SER.

The incumbent will assist CS&I and Agriculture staff to gather information regarding general watershed health and environmental conditions during the field season. Duties will include collecting water and sediment samples (analyzing for pH, conductivity, turbidity, total, suspended and solids materials and organic content) from streams and rivers in Yukon, preparing samples for shipment to Whitehorse for laboratory analysis, measuring stream flows and effluent discharges in and around mining sites, compiles stream flow data, and travels to and from mines sites. Field work involves collection of samples with exposure to noise from heavy equipment and airplanes, dust, and working in all types of terrain. Office work will involving compiling collected field data, preparing samples and research to compile reports.

Field of Study: Environmental and Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering or other related field.

Qualifications: Basic knowledge of field research techniques and data sample collection. Knowledge of environmental monitoring practices. Work independently in remote locations in all types of terrain and weather conditions. Good oral and written communication skills. Good interpersonal, tact and diplomacy skills. Sound computer skills for analysis, report writing and presentation. Willingness to travel extensively in Yukon. Valid Class 5 drivers license is required. FAC and Wilderness First Aid is desired but not a requirement of the position.

STUDENT ENERGY ADVISOR - ENERGY MINES & RESOURCES - ENERGY SOLUTIONS CENTRE

The incumbent will be responsible for the leading the research, design, implementation and evaluations of the Centre's projects through development of a web based energy audit program to facilitate quick and effective energy audits of local homes and businesses, research and reassess commercial energy audits to recommend next steps forward, and research the effect of electric space heating on the Yukon electrical grid. He/she will assist in staff with ongoing projects and act as a government's technical expert and contact point for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

Field of Study: Environmental Science/Engineering, Physics or other related fields of study.

FOREST RESEARCH TECHNICIAN - ENERGY MINES & RESOURCES-FOREST MANAGEMENT

Under the direction of Forest Science Officer, the incumbent will carry out research and monitoring related field projects across the southern and central Yukon Territory. The incumbent will be part of a two-person field crew and will spend most of the summer doing field work. Duties will include entering field data into the monitoring program database, analyzing data, reporting on results and other related tasks/duties as assigned. The purpose of this field program is to gather information to assess how well forest management activities are meeting the goals and objectives of sustainable forest management as outlined in Yukon Forest Management Plans. This information will be used to modify, change or develop new management practices to ensure objectives are being met. Extensive field work which will involve use of ATV and safety training which will be provided.

Field of Study: Renewable Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Geography or other related field of study.

Qualifications: Knowledge of Basic Forest Measurement Sampling Techniques and Yukon Tree species and vegetation recognition. Strong analytical and research skills and familiar with computer applications such as Excel, Word, Access. Basic knowledge of aerial photos, map reading and compass skills with the ability to use GPS route finding. Familiar with ATV use. Valid Standard First Aid/CPR and a class 5 driver's license is required.

Under the direction of Forest Management Technician, the incumbent will carry out Forest Inventory and Planning projects. Assisting with re-measuring of growth and yield plots (permanent sample plots) and measuring temporary plots. Mapping and traversing cut blocks and roads, silvicultrue surveys. Data entry of sample information, assisting with planning and inventory projects as required. This position will require extensive travel and field work within Yukon. The successful candidates will be required to live in a camp setting and conduct work in all weather conditions.

Field of Study: Renewable Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Geography or other related field of study.

Qualifications: Knowledge of Basic Forest Measurement practices and techniques and Yukon Tree species and vegetation recognition. Basic knowledge of aerial photos, map reading and compass skills. JUNIOR ANALYST - ENERGY MINES & RESOURCES - RESOURCE POLICY & PLANNING

The incumbent will be responsible and assist with three specific projects. The mineral projects are always accompanied by a level of financial risk. In this position, the incumbent will use software called "@Risk for Project" and will develop a methodology to allow the Yukon Government to better model the financial risk associated with proposed mine developments in Yukon by running simulations for sensitivity and participate in the training of staff in the use of the system.
