Nova Scotia Stories

There's No Place Like Home

Greetings,
I was born & lived in Sydney, Cape Breton for many years. I married & left the Island (only Love could make me do such a thing!). I have lived all over the world & still say Nova Scotia is the Best of the Best. I still spend several weeks each summer in Ingonish, N.S.
It's a COLD day here in Pittsburgh, PA & I am thinking of July/Aug. in God's Country. There's no place like home.
David Letterman will be missing a really wonderful experience if he does not visit N.S.

Coming Home

We've lived in Brampton, Ontario for 15 years after having immigrated from England. We always said we'd retire back to England, that is until we visited Nova Scotia and fell in love with the Province. We've been back twice since that visit and each time it just gets better and we know we've made the right decision to retire there. We love everything about it and can't wait for the next few years to pass so we can finally move there. The people are wonderful, the scenery is spectacular, we can't find anything to fault it. We'd go now if there was work for us. We've travelled around Canada quite a bit and visited some lovely places but nothing comes close to Nova Scotia. It has that rare quality of making you feel like you've come home, it's so welcoming.

Looking Forward to Lockeport

While travelling in Nova Scotia a few years back, we came upon a little town
called Lockeport. Accomodation was scarce at that particular time, however, we
made it a point to make reservations in the years to follow. We find the
Crescent Beach fascinating, and as a painter, Gull Rock Lighthouse, and its
history draws me back each spring. And then there is fresh lobster just around
the corner from Ocean Mist Cottages. I tell Gail I would like to retire to Nova
Scotia - she thinks it is too far away from our grandchildren, who live in
Ottawa! We're looking forward to our annual visit. Get all your pipers ready!

A Welcome Home!

I live in Halifax but I'm from Canso, Nova Scotia! I work at the
brand new Citadel High School as a teacher and I coach one of our provincial basketball teams. I think Nova Scotia is such an amazing place to live.
I'm so happy to hear about the person from Brampton moving to my home town. Canso and the rest of Nova Scotia is such a beautiful place. I'm glad you've enjoyed the people and the place.
Here's to good times in the Maritimes! Cheers,
Devin R.

Smitten with Nova Scotia

My wifes' sister lives in Berwick and on my first visit to the a
Annapolis valley I was smitten. On three subsequent visits we house hunted, finally finding an old beauty of 156 years in Cheverie. Our back yard faces onto the Minas Basin, with glorious sunsets almost every evening. After our last, month long home renovation/holiday it was a  heart -wrenching struggle leaving Nova Scotia. Now, two months later I am determined to find employment in your beautiful province that I hope to call mine soon.

Moving to Nova Scotia

After visiting Canso N.S. for the past three summers, my husband and I bought a house in August and are getting ready to move there in two
weeks. We can hardly wait!!!!  Such a beautiful province, and friendly people.

Nova Scotia Bound

My husband and I had our first visit to Nova Scotia in 2005, we returned to Calgary (lived here since 1996) promising we would start planning our move out east!  We have attempted this twice but have always "postponed" at the last minute with fear of leaving our financially rewarding jobs.  We are commited either way now to moving spring 2008, no looking back.  We love Nova Scotia and hope the people will embrace us as we have the province.  We are a couple of outsiders wanting desperately to be "insiders"!  We cannot wait to start our new lives in such a beautiful, rich with history and pride province in our wonderful country.

Looking for Adventure

My Name is Oscar and I live in Kenya. Kenya is on the Eastern Part of Africa round about in the middle. I'm 29 years and have lived here all my life apart from the occasional vacational visits to the neighbouring countries Uganda & Tanzania. I have worked for one of the leading Banks in Kenya for close to 9 years now. The exciting stories I have heard about Canada, moreso Nova Scotia have led me to look for employment here, which means new challenges, experiences and friends. A real Adventure for me!

Proud Nova Scotians

My boyfriend graduated from X in 2000 and got a job right away in Calgary. I still had one year left to complete my degree and I followed him there after graduation. I had secured a great job during my last year of school and couldn't wait to get to Calgary and settle in. It was a great place to be for a couple in our early 20's, looking for experience in our field and trying to pay off student loans.

When we came home for Christmas in 2003, we got engaged (surrounded by my family at home in Cape Breton). We planned our wedding at the church across the street from my house and got married in September 2005. We spent our honeymoon on the beach in Ingonish and talked a lot about where our lives were headed, how we wanted to spend our lives and made a commitment to one another then, that by our 5th anniversary, we'd be living in Nova Scotia. We wanted to have children and we wanted our children to be Nova Scotians, we wanted to raise them close to our parents, to have big family holidays and Sunday dinners. We wanted to spend our lives close to the ocean, close to our parents and grandparents and lifelong friends. If it meant taking a pay cut to be happy, we were OK with that.

After our honeymoon and return to Calgary, we spent a few months discussing it and decided to go even sooner. My husband decided to switch careers and go back to school (in Nova Scotia) and realizing the job market in Nova Scotia was quite different than what I was used to in Calgary, I gave myself a full year to find a good job. I waited a few months to tell my supervisor that I would be quitting within the next year. I made it clear this was a personal decision and that I was very sorry to be leaving the company and a job that I absolutely adored....but life comes first!

It couldn't have worked out better, my boss had a bit of time to "mull it over" and came back to me with a proposal to "telecommute". I would be working still for the company I love, in a job I loved full time out of my house in Cape Breton!!! Who could imagine anything better? It seemed too good to be true...and it still does!

We bought our dream home in Cape Breton - a 75 year old home that's been refinished/renovated and is just oozing with character. We are next door to the land where my grandmother grew up and living in my hometown. We've been here just under a year (11 months) and my husband has completed his schooling and is working full time....and I am still a "telecommuter"....there are no traffic jams, I can see the ocean from my window. I feel more settled here in 11 months than I did after 5 years living in Calgary.

It was much harder to come home than it was to leave.....it was the hardest decision we've had to make together, but there are absolutely no regrets. This has been the best thing we've ever done....we're proud to be Nova Scotians and it feels great to be back home permanently!

Sharon in Alberta - soon to be Nova Scotia

"We as a couple are retired and have lived in Alberta for 44 yrs have made a big  life change for the future. We have decided to move home to "Truro" and enjoy the beautiful province in full. As children we were not exposed to much of the culture and the great things to see. Now is the "Time".  Our move should be early fall."

Peter Hyslop

"I moved from Halifax to Calgary in June of 1998 with my wife and two children because of the employment opportunities afforded us there. We both obtained jobs at once and purchased a starter home, moving 3 times over the next 9 years to bigger homes in better areas of Calgary. When the opportunity came up for us both to be transferred back to Halifax we jumped at it, even though it meant leaving both our children out West. Our daughter lives and works in Edmonton and our son does the same in Vancouver. As we are "empty nesters" with no grandchildren as yet, and the re-sale market being what it was at the time the decision was a no-brainer.  Our last home almost doubled in value in a year and a half and we came out of Alberta pretty well set up It felt like we had won the lottery, without purchasing a ticket! We were a bit disappointed that the housing market went up as much as it did over the 10 years we were gone, but we still purchased a nice house in Halifax West at a price approximately $150,000.00 less than a similar house in a similar neighbourhood Calgary.  Needless to say, we are glad to be home, and glad to be back on the water again!"
