Vital Statistics
The Vital Statistics Division of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations is
responsible for registration of vital events of birth, death, marriage and stillbirth
which occur in the province of Nova Scotia. Official Certificates are issued from
information contained on these registrations.
Nova Scotia Birth Certificate
Beginning December 3, 2007, Nova Scotia will be the first province in Canada to launch a new highly secure and durable bilingual birth certificate. The certificate, which is the new Canadian standard, is the most secure birth certificate in the world.

New restrictions on who can apply for
a birth certificate went into effect on February 15, 2002. Vital Statistics will issue a birth
certificate only to the person named on the certificate, a parent or legal guardian
or the administrator of the person's estate. An
