Yukon Government Reinstates Big Fish Regulation
WHITEHORSE - The Yukon government has reinstated previous Yukon fishing regulations that set slot limits for fish on 42 lakes classified as conservation waters, Environment Minister Peter Jenkins announced today.
The change is in response to concerns raised by sport fishers and the Yukon Fish and Game Association when the regulations of 2004 – 2005 set maximum size limits prohibiting anglers from possessing larger lake trout.
The minister also said the fishing regulation changes now mean the transboundary waters between Yukon and British Columbia are again consistent.
Under the new regulation, effective April 2005 – March 2007, anglers may keep one lake trout that is longer than 100 cm or 39 inches. The previous regulation did not allow possession of lake trout over 100 cm. Anglers must still release all lake trout that are between 65 and 100 cm.
The daily catch limits are unchanged.
The new fishing regulation booklet is at the printers and will be available soon for distribution to fishing license vendors and other outlets throughout the territory.
