Smart Car Purchase Signals The Greening Of Fleet Vehicles

WHITEHORSE - Environment Minister Dennis Fentie announced that a Smart For Two diesel has been added to the Government of Yukon's Fleet Vehicle Agency. The agency has more than two dozen new sub-compact and compact automobiles that offer greener, less expensive transportation.

"We will lead by example with meaningful initiatives to cut greenhouse gases," Environment Minister Dennis Fentie said. "The 'greening' of the fleet is part of this government's promise to act on climate change and to cut operational costs for Yukon taxpayers. These cars are cheaper, cleaner and more efficient."

The Smart Car, now on lease to the Department of Environment, emits half the greenhouse gases of a regular mid-sized sedan and consumes just 4.6 litres of gas per 100 km in town, and 3.8 litres per 100 km on the highway (61 m.p.g  in town and 74 m.p.g on the highway).

Purchased by the Fleet Vehicle Agency this fiscal year, the Smart Car is the latest addition under the replacement strategy that was launched in 2005. Since then, 16 compact, four-cylinder sport utility vehicles have been purchased, as well as 15 compact and sub-compact cars.

"With sustainability a priority, the investment in these vehicles is a move by our government to cut costs by increasing the efficiency of the fleet and helping to reduce the environmental impact of operating the vehicles in it," Highways and Public Works Minister Archie Lang said.

Vehicles of this efficiency were previously not part of the government fleet.
