Yukon To Assist With Rebuilding Marsh Lake Recycling Facility
WHITEHORSE - Environment Minister Dennis Fentie is pleased to announce Environment Yukon will provide the funding to rebuild the recycling facility at the Marsh Lake waste transfer station.
The request for funding came from the Marsh Lake Solid Waste Management Society after the community's free store and non-refundable recycling sheds were burned down in December 2006.
"We are moving to help the Marsh Lake Solid Waste Management Society get back in action," Fentie said. "Government of Yukon advocates and supports recycling programs that are consumer-supported and run by the communities they serve."
The $6,008.64 in funding comes from Environment Yukon's Waste Reduction and Recycling Initiative, pending legislative approval. The Marsh Lake Solid Waste Management Society has agreed to provide approximately $2,900 worth of volunteer labour and administration in order to complete the project.
The Marsh Lake waste transfer station is now attended 40 hours per week. During off-hours, the gate to the facility is locked to help prevent further vandalism and destruction.
Government of Yukon provides support in monthly operating allowances and grants to 17 locally operated, consumer-supported recycling facilities in 16 communities throughout Yukon.
