Yukoners Encouraged To Celebrate Parks

WHITEHORSE - Parks Canada, Yukon Parks, Yukon Historic Sites and the Yukon Conservation Society are offering a variety of events around the territory as part of the national Parks Day on Saturday, July 21.

Last year there were more than 250 registered Parks Day events across the country, with various activites such as kite-making workshops, nature walks, canoe tours and art displays.

Displays from Parks Canada, Yukon Parks and the Yukon Conservation Society will be in the Elijah Smith Building from July 16 to 20.  Other events will be geared to outdoor and recreational activities on Saturday, July 21.

A Yukon Parks interpreter will lead a leisurely and informative walk, beginning at 10 a.m. from the Wolf Creek campground, and will go along the Wolf Creek interpretive trail to the Yukon River.

Park interpreters will lead a four-hour hike from the Dempster Highway into the backcountry of Tombstone Park beginning at 1 p.m. at the Interpretive Centre at km 71.4 on the Dempster Highway. They will be talking about the wildflowers, landforms and creatures that make this sub-arctic landscape come alive.

The annual free boat ride and guided tour of Fort Selkirk Historic site on the Yukon River is offered by the historic sites program of the Yukon Department of Tourism and Culture and the Selkirk First Nation. Reservations are required. To book your spot call Kerri Scholz at 667-5386.
