Yukon To Fund Community Justice Projects

WHITEHORSE – Justice Minister Marian C. Horne has announced that the Government of Yukon is committing $433,900 this year and is renewing its funding agreements with the territory's nine community justice projects.

"We thank everyone for their patience in this time of uncertainty. These projects have been performing a service for a long time," Horne said. "I am pleased that they can continue to provide justice services in their respective communities."

Prior to the federal budget announcement, Horne lobbied the federal government to secure funding on behalf of Yukon's community justice projects.

The federal government announced, in its recent budget, funding for the national Aboriginal Justice Strategy of $14.5 million for the next two fiscal years. Combined with Canada's contribution through the Aboriginal Justice Strategy, more than $869,900 will be invested in Yukon community justice projects this year.

The Yukon Department of Justice is currently contacting each of the community justice coordinators to arrange their funding agreements.

This spring, the department will also be conducting a review of its community justice initiatives to determine the future needs and directions for these projects.
