Moving Forward With Planning Of A New Correctional Centre

WHITEHORSE - Justice Minister Marian C. Horne has announced that the Government of Yukon will be committing $3.24 million to continue planning for a new correctional centre next year.

Replacement of the Whitehorse Correctional Centre was identified as an issue by Yukoners during the Consultation on Corrections and was included in the Corrections Action Plan as a priority.

"The government is working closely with the Council of Yukon First Nations and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation in planning for a new correctional centre," Horne said. "First Nations are actively involved on the Building Advisory Committee that was struck to develop options for a new correctional centre that will meet the needs of offenders and staff for many years to come."

The money will be used to advance the design-related work for the new correctional centre, including: the completion of a needs analysis, functional and spatial programming and options evaluations, followed by conceptual and final design, quantity surveying, cost estimating, value engineering and initial site development operations.

"Replacing the Whitehorse Correctional Centre is part of the Yukon government's correctional redevelopment strategy to create the best correctional system in Canada," Horne added. "Our government is committed to building a new correctional centre that reflects the needs of the clients we serve, and provides opportunities for them to heal, to take responsibility and move forward in their lives."
