Yukon Government Supports Community Youth Projects

WHITEHORSE - Yukon youth will benefit from $43,698 for 25 projects supported by the Youth Investment Fund.

The projects cover a variety of Yukon-wide youth centre activities, leadership training, after-school activities, physical activities and cultural events and workshops.

The successful projects were announced today by the ministers of the fund's sponsoring departments: Premier Dennis Fentie, minister responsible for the Youth Directorate; Community Services Minister Glenn Hart; Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers; Women's Directorate Minister Elaine Taylor; Justice Minister Marian C. Horne and Education Minister Patrick Rouble.

The Youth Investment Fund supports community-driven initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of Yukon youth.  Many of the projects are designed to help youth susceptible to "at risk" behaviors or those who are considered to be "at risk".

"The Government of Yukon continues to be committed in providing opportunities for youth through supportive initiatives such as the Youth Investment Fund," Dennis Fentie, minister responsible for the Youth Directorate, said.

"Being a non-profit organization, the funding received from the Youth Investment Fund is extremely helpful as we begin our much anticipated Keish Summer Day Camps for the 2007-08 fiscal year," Skookum Jim Friendship Centre Recreation Coordinator Chris Nash said. "Our goal is to eliminate barriers of participation for youth, and with help from funders such as the Youth Investment Fund, we have been successful in making our day camps accessible to all youth, and we look forward to offering this successful project in the future."

"The Youth Investment Fund has helped B.Y.T.E.'s community outreach project move forwards," B.Y.T.E. Executive Director Rachel Parks said. "The fund enables young people to be drawn in to positive community based activities."

Since the fund's inception in 1995, 406 projects have been funded. The deadline for the next round of applications is October 1.
