Government Continues to Address the Adverse Impacts of Illegal Activities

WHITEHORSE – The Yukon public has responded positively to the government’s Safer Communities and Neigbourhoods (SCAN) program to address the impacts of drug trafficking, bootlegging and prostitution on Yukon’s communities and neighbourhoods, Justice Minister Marian C. Horne announced today.

"The SCAN legislation has proven effective in addressing harmful activity. Communication protocols between the Yukon government and some First Nations have supported the implementation of SCAN on these lands," Horne said.

As of the end of June, the SCAN office received 96 complaints on 75 different properties since the office opened Nov. 30, 2006. These complaints resulted in nine formal evictions and one official warning. Seven properties have voluntarily ceased activity. These complaints have come from across Yukon.

"We look forward to continuing to work closely with other First Nations to determine the best ways to address the impacts of ongoing, harmful activity on their communities," Horne added.

Yukoners who witness drug dealing, bootlegging or prostitution in their neighbourhoods or communities can report the activity to the SCAN office by calling 456-SCAN (7226) in Whitehorse or toll-free in the communities at 1-866-530-SCAN (7226).
