Crane Operators Appeal Board
The Crane Operators Appeal Board is one of the newest tribunals in Nova Scotia Environment and Labour, created pursuant to the Crane Operators and Power Engineers Act which came into force on September 1, 2001. It is an independent adjudicative tribunal charged with considering appeals filed under Part I of the Act.
Inspectors, including the Chief Examiner, in the Power Engineers and Crane Operators Section of the Public Safety Division are responsible for ensuring compliance with Part I of the Act. It is the duty of the Crane Operators Examination Committee to issue certificates of qualification to crane operators. Any person aggrieved by a decision of the Examination Committee, an inspector, the Chief Examiner, or any other employee of the Department may appeal, in writing, within 30 days to the Crane Operators Appeal Board.
The Crane Operators Appeal Board may conduct a hearing orally or in writing. It has the power to:
- refer a matter back to the Chief Examiner or an inspector for reconsideration with or without directions; or
- make any decision that the Chief Examiner or an inspector could have made.
All decisions of the Crane Operators Appeal Board are in writing and are supported by reasons. Decisions of the Board are final.
The Crane Operators Appeal Board Office coordinates and provides the administrative support for the Crane Operators Appeal Board.

Members
The Crane Operators Appeal Board consists of three members: one professional engineer (mechanical), one crane operator and one crane owner or their representative. The qualifications required by each member are established in the Crane Operators Regulations
