This month, we're celebrating the wines of Italy, the regional theme of the 2008 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. Check out the excellent selection of Italian wines available at BC Liquor Stores – look for the Viva Italiano display of wines from Italy in participating stores from January 29 to February 24.

Deep ruby red colour with sweet aromas of dried prunes and raisins. Soft and dry on the palate with typical baked-cherry flavours mixed with hints of cocoa and cinnamon. Attractively long finishing and full-bodied with soft tannins.

Jammy and sweet in character with expressive and well-defined plum and blackberry fruit, this Italian red is rich with a lush, velvety finish.
The bouquet has typical almond and cinnamon tones. The taste is velvety with scents of cherry, musk, spices and wood. Delicious with hearty entrees, roast beef or pork, and some hard cheeses.
Intense plum and blackcurrant flavours are enriched by pungent spiciness in this Sangiovese. The complex palate is underpinned by dense texture and fine-grained tannins, creating structure without being heavy. The finish is seamless and lingering.
Made from one of the oldest Italian producers, this wine has fruity hints on the nose that blend well with the toasty, chocolate and vanilla notes from aging in wood. It's a complex, well-structured wine with smooth, stylish tannins.

This dry, white wine is pale straw-yellow in colour and has a pleasant yet intense aroma of golden apples. Excellent as an aperitif, it's also an ideal accompaniment to seafood salads and fish or shellfish-based pasta and rice courses.
Characterized by an intense, ruby red colour, this wine has has a rich aroma with hints of violets. It is dry yet full-flavoured and delicious with roasted and grilled meats.
