Yukon Government Injects $153,000 into Community Youth Projects

WHITEHORSE – Yukon youth and community groups are continuing to benefit from the Winter Activities Program with total funding of $153,000 for 2007/2008.

One sponsoring organization from each of the sixteen communities and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation are invited to apply for Winter Activities Program funding to offer activities, along with training and employment opportunities for youth.

"It is important to provide programs that specifically support and benefit youth and communities," Dennis Fentie, minister responsible for the Youth Directorate said. "We are pleased to provide opportunities through projects that support youth, and in turn help to build healthy and safe communities."

A wide variety of youth activities throughout Yukon are undertaken including: indoor soccer, snowboarding, first aid training, drum making and a variety of after school programs.

"I hope the Yukon government knows that this program is providing a lot of bang for the buck in terms of making a difference in the lives of our youth," Ian Spencer, Village of Mayo recreation coordinator said. "Thanks to this program, these youth projects provide several weekends of fun activities and opportunities which communities would not otherwise have been able to deliver."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Crime Prevention Yukon for administering the Winter Activities Program over the years," Fentie added.  "We‘ve been told that community members are noticing positive changes in their youth, thanks to this program."

The program has been funded by the Youth Directorate and administered through Crime Prevention Yukon since the winter of 1999/2000. For more information, visit Crime Prevention Yukon at 205 Rogers Street in
